A new HVAC system cost in Palm Beach County typically runs $5,400 to $14,700 installed for a standard changeout, depending mostly on tonnage, equipment tier, and efficiency rating. If you have three quotes in front of you and they are thousands of dollars apart, that spread usually is not one company gouging you. It is three companies quoting three different jobs. Once you understand what separates them, the decision gets a lot simpler.

In my experience, I quote most standard changeouts in this county somewhere between $5,400 and $14,700 installed, and where a specific house lands has less to do with the equipment than with what is above the ceiling.


Here is how that breaks down by system size. Treat it as a starting point for your budget, not a quote for your house.

Square footage is a starting point, not an answer. More on that in the sizing section, because guessing tonnage off floor area is one of the most expensive mistakes made in this market.


What those ranges assume:

  • A matched outdoor condenser and indoor air handler or evaporator coil

  • Entry to mid tier single-stage or two-stage equipment meeting Florida's 14.3 SEER2 minimum

  • Removal and disposal of the old system

  • Basic refrigerant line flush, new electrical whip and disconnect, new drain safety switches

  • A standard digital or basic Wi-Fi thermostat

  • Palm Beach County mechanical permit and the required post-installation inspection


What those ranges do not include:

  • Ductwork replacement, which adds roughly $4,000 to $10,000 when it is needed

  • Electrical upgrades like an outdated panel or heavy rewiring

  • Crane or hoisting work for rooftop and difficult-access installs


One important caveat on all of these numbers. Pricing moves with the brand and equipment tier you install. An entry-level single-stage system from a value brand and a premium variable-speed system from a top-tier manufacturer can differ by several thousand dollars on the exact same house, with the same tonnage and the same labor. So a quote that comes in above these ranges is not automatically high, and a quote below them is not automatically a bargain. Ask what brand and what tier you are being quoted before you compare anything.


In this market, the biggest driver of where a home lands in these ranges is not the equipment at all. It is the ductwork. That second list above is where most of the quote-to-quote variance actually lives.

Why Three HVAC Quotes Can Be Thousands Apart

The call I get most often starts the same way. Three quotes, spread four or five thousand dollars apart, and a homeowner convinced somebody is lying to them.


Nobody is lying, usually. They are quoting three different jobs.


I had a version of this conversation in a driveway off Southern Boulevard not long ago. The homeowner had quotes at roughly $7,000, $9,500, and just under $14,000. He assumed the cheap one was honest and the expensive one was gouging him. So we walked the property together. The $7,000 quote was a condenser swap. Outdoor unit only. Everything else stays. The $14,000 quote included a full system, new ductwork in a 1970s attic where the flex had been sagging and leaking for two decades, a rebuilt condensate drain, and the permit.


Those are not competing prices. They are competing definitions of the word "replacement."


Before you compare a single dollar figure, find out which of these each quote actually covers:

  • Outdoor condenser only, or condenser plus indoor air handler and coil

  • Existing ductwork reused, repaired, or fully replaced

  • Condensate drain reused or rebuilt

  • Permit pulled and inspection included, or not

  • Electrical whip, disconnect, and drain safety switches included

  • Thermostat included, and which tier


Cost to install central air when you already have ductwork


Having existing ductwork does take real money off the job. You are paying for equipment and installation labor rather than equipment, labor, and a full duct system. That is often the difference between a quote in the sevens and a quote in the low teens.


The catch is that "existing" and "usable" are not the same word. Flex duct in a hot South Florida attic has a service life, and plenty of the systems I open up in older West Palm Beach neighborhoods are moving conditioned air through ducts that have been leaking into the attic for years. If your ducts are shot, reusing them means paying for a high-efficiency system and then throwing a chunk of its output into an attic. Ask any contractor quoting a reuse to tell you specifically what your ductwork actually needs and what they found when they inspected it.


What a West Palm Beach System Actually Includes


Most of the HVAC pricing you find online is written for homes with gas heat, which is why the numbers feel off when you apply them here. The large majority of Florida homes are all-electric. What you almost certainly have is either a heat pump or a straight-cool system with electric heat strips in the air handler. One condenser outside, one air handler inside.


That means a full replacement here is two pieces of equipment, not three. If somebody starts quoting you a separate furnace for a West Palm Beach house, stop and ask them to show you what is actually installed.


The straight-cool versus heat pump question is worth asking your contractor directly. A heat pump handles both heating and cooling from the same equipment and runs more efficiently on the handful of cold nights we get. A straight-cool system with strip heat costs less up front and leans on resistance heat when temperatures drop. Either is defensible here. What matters is that you know which one you are being quoted.


Can You Just Replace the Outside Unit?


You can. In this county it is usually the most expensive thing you can buy.


Here is what happens when you put a new high-efficiency condenser on a fifteen-year-old indoor coil.


You do not get the efficiency rating on the box. That rating was tested on a matched pair, condenser and coil together. Mismatch them and the real-world performance drops, sometimes significantly. You paid for a number you will never see on your power bill. If the coil is the part that failed, replacing the coil on its own is a separate decision with its own math.


You usually void the manufacturer's parts warranty. Most manufacturers require a matched, properly registered system. Read the warranty terms on any proposal that reuses your existing coil.


You lose the FPL rebate outright. FPL's residential HVAC program requires a complete replacement of the existing electric cooling system, including the condenser, blower, and evaporator coil. Replacing only some components does not qualify. The rebate is $200 applied as an instant credit on the installing contractor's invoice, the system has to hit 15.2 SEER2 or better, and the work has to be done by an FPL Participating Independent Contractor. That is $200 gone on a technicality most homeowners never hear about until the invoice shows up without the credit on it.


There are narrow cases where a condenser-only swap makes sense, usually when the indoor equipment is genuinely new. If your air handler is more than a few years old, the cheap quote is a payment plan with the balance due later, and a full system replacement is the honest comparison.


Sizing: Why a Bigger System Costs You Twice

Somebody has had a three-ton system for twenty years, the house never felt cold enough, so they ask me for a four. I understand the instinct completely. In Florida it backfires.


An oversized system hits your thermostat setpoint fast and shuts off. It never runs long enough to pull moisture out of the air. So you end up sitting at 72 degrees feeling clammy, with condensation on the vents and that musty smell in the returns by August. You paid more for the equipment, you are paying more to run it, and the house is less comfortable than it was before.


I have gone back to houses where a previous contractor upsized "to be safe," and the homeowner's real problem was never capacity at all. It was leaky ductwork and a return that was choked down. The system could not move enough air, so the house felt warm, so somebody added tonnage to a problem that more tonnage cannot fix.


A load calculation would have caught it. A rule-of-thumb guess off square footage never does.


A proper load calculation, called a Manual J, accounts for your insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling height, duct condition, and how the house is actually built. Ask each contractor whether they performed one. In my experience, the answer tells you a lot about how the rest of the job will go. Rebates and Tax Credits: What's Actually Left


The federal tax credit is gone. The Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit expired after December 31, 2025. Systems installed in 2026 do not qualify.


I still see proposals in this market with 30 percent knocked off the bottom line for it. That money is not there anymore, and a contractor who has not updated their paperwork in eight months is telling you something about how they run the rest of the job.


The FPL rebate is real and current. It is $200, applied as an instant credit on the contractor's invoice rather than a mail-in form. To qualify:

  • Complete system replacement, condenser plus blower plus evaporator coil

  • 15.2 SEER2 or higher, which is a step above Florida's 14.3 SEER2 legal minimum

  • Installed by an FPL Participating Independent Contractor

  • Active residential FPL account


Two questions worth asking every bidder: are you an FPL Participating Independent Contractor, and will the $200 appear as an itemized credit on my invoice? AC Changeout Permits in Palm Beach County


Take the permit seriously.


Palm Beach County's changeout form documents both the new equipment and the old equipment. Model numbers on the condenser, air handler, and coil. Heat strip size. Breaker and wire sizing. Signed by the license qualifier, which means the work has to be tied to a licensed and insured contractor who is putting their number on it. That form exists specifically so a mismatched or undersized install shows up on the record.


Open it and look at the section labeled Existing System Components. The county is not just recording what went in. It is recording what came out, so the two can be compared.


When somebody offers to skip the permit to save you a few hundred dollars, understand what they are actually selling you. They are removing the one document that would have caught a bad install, and they are removing the inspection that verifies the work. Unpermitted mechanical work follows the house. It surfaces at closing, and it can complicate an insurance claim.


A permit line item on a quote is not padding. It is the cheapest quality control you will ever buy on this job.


What Coastal Homes Should Budget For

If you are east of Dixie, buy the coated coil.


Salt gets between the copper tubing and the aluminum fins on your outdoor unit, our humidity turns it into an electrolyte, and the coil pits until refrigerant leaks out. It is not dramatic and you will not see it happening. You will just get a service call in year seven for a leak that cannot be economically repaired.


Here is what I see in the field, and I want to be clear these are my own numbers from working this market rather than published figures:

  • Inland Palm Beach County: expect twelve to fifteen years

  • A few miles from the Atlantic: eight to twelve is more realistic

  • Within about a mile of open water: I have replaced units at five or six


Corrosion-resistant hardware costs more up front and it is the cheapest years you will ever buy. If two quotes are close and one includes a coated coil for a coastal home, that one is not the more expensive quote. It is the one that priced the job correctly.


Hardware is only half of it. Keeping a coastal system maintained, including regular coil rinsing, is what gets you to the top of those ranges instead of the bottom.


This also means a quote written off inland assumptions may be the wrong quote for your address. Tell every contractor how far you are from the water and ask what they are specifying because of it.


How to Compare HVAC Quotes Without Guessing

Every quote should tell you, in writing:

  • Tonnage and SEER2 rating of the specific equipment

  • What is included: condenser only, or condenser plus air handler and coil

  • Ductwork: reused, repaired, or replaced, and what was inspected to decide

  • Permit as a line item, with inspection included

  • Removal and disposal of the old system

  • Condensate drain work and new drain safety switches

  • Electrical whip and disconnect

  • Thermostat make and tier

  • Parts warranty and labor warranty, listed separately, with registration handled

  • FPL rebate as an itemized credit, and whether the contractor is a PIC

  • Coated or corrosion-resistant coil if you are near the coast


If a quote is missing half of that, you do not have a quote. You have a number.


And here is the fastest thing you can do today, at no cost and with no commitment: send your two best contractors back and ask them to rewrite their proposals to identical scope. Same tonnage, same efficiency tier, same duct decision, same permit. Then compare.

Inland, twelve to fifteen years is reasonable. Closer to the coast, eight to twelve. Within a mile of open water it can be shorter without corrosion-resistant equipment.

No. An oversized system short cycles, never runs long enough to dehumidify, and leaves the house cold and clammy. Sizing should come from a load calculation, not square footage.

Equipment tier moves the total more than most homeowners expect. A value-brand single-stage system and a premium variable-speed system can be several thousand dollars apart on an identical house. You are paying for compressor technology, humidity control, sound levels, warranty length, and parts availability. Any of those can be the right call. Just make sure you are comparing quotes at the same tier before you decide one is expensive.


The Short Version


The homeowner off Southern Boulevard did not take the cheapest quote or the most expensive one. He had two contractors rewrite their proposals to identical scope, and once they did, they came in about eight hundred dollars apart.


That is the whole trick. Do not shop the number. Shop the scope.
